| Original text | Τα μαντίλια χρησιμοποιούνται από όλες τις γυναίκες του Μυστρά. Οταν οι νεαρές χριστιανές χορεύουν στους γάμους συγγενών, δεν δίνουν ποτέ το χέρι στους νεαρούς, γιατί θα το έδιναν γυμνό, εφόσον οι Ελληνες δεν φορούν ποτέ γάντια. Ετσι, η κοπέλα και το αγόρι κρατιούνται από ένα μαντήλι που το κορίτσι προτείνει με σεμνότητα. Αν ο νεαρός έπαιρνε το θάρρος να γλιστρήσει το χέρι του, η οποιαδήποτε κοπέλα θα του έδινε μία με το δικό της στο πρόσωπο. Υπήρξαν περιπτώσεις που χάλασε το γλέντι και γάμοι που διαλύθηκαν για τέτοιες αιτίες. |
| English translation | The kerchiefs are used by all of the women of Mystras. When young Christian women dance at weddings of their relatives, they never give their hands to the young men because they would have to give them naked, as Greeks never wore gloves. Thus, the girl and the boy were holding each other by the kerchief, offered by a girl to a boy with propriety and modesty. If the lad had the courage to slip his hand, any of the girls could slap him in the face. There were cases of spoilt celebrations and broken marriages because of such occurrences. |
