| Original text | Οι βιολιτζήδες, οι λυράρηδες και οι τσαμπουνιέρηδες παίζανε σκοπούς εύθυμους νησιώτικους που ξεσήκωναν τους πανηγυριστάς και αμέσως τα παλληκάρια έσερναν πρώτοι το χορό δίνοντας τα άσπρα μαντήλια στις κοπελιές. Χωρισμένοι σε παρέες χόρευαν παντού, ολάκερη η απλάδα κάτω από τον ουρανό ήταν δική τους. Τα παλληκάρια χόρευαν πειθαρχημένα, απλά, αγέλαστα, και στη ρόδα του χορού ανέμιζαν τα άσπρα μαντήλια τους. Ο Συρτός και ο Μπάλος ήταν οι αγαπημένοι χοροί τους και οι κοπελιές χόρευαν σεμνά στον ρυθμό των οργάνων που έπαιζαν ντάιμα. Στο αποκορύφωμα του χορού ο κύκλος έσπαγε και τότε χωρισμένοι οι χορευτές σε ζευγάρια χόρευαν κρατώντας τα μαντήλια και κάνοντας "φιγούρες" όμορφες που συναρπάζανε τους παρευρισκομένους κι άρχιζαν να κτυπούν παλαμάκια στον ρυθμόν που έπαιζε ο τσαμπονιέρης ή ο λυριτζής, αντάμα με τις βαριές χτυπιές του "τουμπιού" που έκανε το τεζαρισμένο πετσί του να τρέμη. |
| English translation | The fiddlers, the lyrists and the bagpipers were playing the Islanders’ merry songs and the lads would immediately start for the dance by offering white kerchiefs to the girls. Divided into groups they were dancing everywhere, all the lightness of the world belonged to them. The lads danced with discipline and seriousness, simply, and in the reel and spinning of the dance, they waved their white kerchiefs. Syrtos and Mpalos were their favourite dances and the girls were dancing with modesty according to the rhythm dictated by the playing instruments. At the dance climax the circle was breaking and the dancers - divided into couples - were dancing together and holding kerchiefs, and performing beautiful “figures” that fascinated the bystanders who applauded them, clapping their hands in the rhythm played by the bagpipes of the lyrist, in accordance with the heavy beat of the toumpi drum, making its weary leather tremble. |
