| Original text | Χορός που φαίνεται να έχει συμβολικό χαρακτήρα. Λέγεται ότι χορεύεται μόνο από γυναίκες, πιασμένες από τη ζώνη. Κρατούν στο χέρι τους ένα μαντήλι και σύμφωνα με τη μουσική φράση, που είναι αργή και αντηχεί σαν επίκληση, στέκουν και σηκώνουν το μαντήλι προς τον ουρανό και μετά το κατεβάζουν προς τη γη τρεις φορές σείοντάς το συνέχεια, τρεμουλιαστά δηλαδή, και με θρησκευτική προσήλωση φωνάζοντας "η-η-η-η..." σαν να επικαλούνται τον Θεό να στείλει τη βροχή για τη βλάστηση της γης. Αυτή την ερμηνεία έδωσα όταν πρωτόειδα το χορό. |
| English translation | A dance that seems to have symbolic meaning. It is said to be danced only by women who hold each other’s belts. Each holds a kerchief in her hand and depending on the musical phrase - which is slow and repetitive like an invocation - they stand and raise the kerchief towards the sky and lower it towards the ground three times, shaking it continuously, and with a religious commitment they shout “ee-ee-ee-ee”. As if they were asking God to send rain for the vegetation cycle of the fertile soil. This was my interpretation when I first saw the dance. |
