“Dora Stratou” Dance Theatre is a live-museum of traditional Greek dance. The Theatre is active in such fields as scientific research, education and art.
Dora Stratou Dance Theatre is the one-of-a-kind live-museum of traditional Greek dance. It was founded in 1953 by Dora Stratou, the artist, researcher and cultural activist. The Theatre is a public-benefit institution supported by the Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports, the Greek Tourism Organization (EOT) and the municipality of Athens. The Theatre runs a wide cultural and educational activities, organizes dance lessons, workshops, lectures and lessons for primary schools. It takes part in the research on dance ethnology, history and sociology and cooperates with the International Dance Council CID and with UNESCO. The Theater also organizes annual events such as the World Congress on Dance Research and festivals in Anapali and Emelia.
“Dora Stratou” Dance Theatre performs regularly in the amphitheatre on the slopes of Philopappou Hill in Athens. 75 dancers, musicians and singers take part in each show, all dressed in traditional Greek costumes from the Theatre collection that counts more than 2 thousand traditional outfits, jewelry ornaments and objects used in dance.
The Theatre publishes CDs and videos from its performances as well as books about traditional Greek dance.
